The Alchemist Question #2

What is this overall story trying to tell the reader? (I want you to know that at different times in my life I have understood and related to various different morals).

To me, this story seemed to have some pretty strong (almost) deterministic themes. It seemed to suggest that there is one path that each of us are meant to follow in this life, and that if we are not in tune enough with the rest of the world, we will make poor decisions that result in a life that requires complacence and compromise.
Overall, the story had a very Middle-Eastern feel to it, but I think the theme is not too far from Christianity's idea that the choices that we make will determine whether or not we reach a better life that has been prepared for us.
