I personally was surprised to read about the seemingly strong presence that the communist party had in Iran during the revolution. Maybe it's just my own ignorance, but I never knew that communism had much of a following in the Middle East at all. In fact, I had been under the impression that communism had become an unpopular idea in much of Europe and the Middle East after the USSR became such an aggressor during and after WWII.
This is embarrassingly ignorant, but I never thought about how many non-Muslims lived in Iran. I also knoew absolutely nothing about the Iranian revolution. I was a little bit annoyed about the jumpy-ness of the book, because I would have really liked to learn more about Iran's history. It was hard to piece things together the way the book was written.
