As the world’s biggest celebrity, as John McCain's recent commercial calls him, does Obama hold the “it” factor for you, or is he just putting on a show with no substance? Explain.
Because we don't have a TV, I don't really feel like I can comment b/c I need to spend more time hearing/watching him speak. But I'd love to hear other people's opinions...
Well, I don't know that I feel like he's a big celebrity - right now, I don't know of anybody who knows who Obama is doesn't know who McCain is. But I did know who Barack Obama was long before I knew who McCain was, but I mostly attribute that to having read this book a while ago, to watching Loren obsess over his speech four years ago, and to having a father-in-law who loves to talk (preach?) constantly about politics.
In response to the question, I'd rather watch him than most famous people because he is pretty eloquent and direct - so if that is the "it" factor, then yes.
Barack Obama is an incredibly dynamic and talented speaker. I really was so thrilled by his speech at the convention four years ago. I think he does have substance and means what he says, however, I don't know if he really holds the "it" factor for me. I believe he's sincere, but I'll admit that he may not have been my first choice, despite his charisma and eloquence.
Marci, I don't necessarily think that celebrities are wearing Obama shirts because he is "popular." If Hillary was the candidate for the Democratic party (or Edwards, etc.), they'd be wearing that shirt. Celebrities for the most part are a pretty liberal set these days and seem to support Democrats.
Back to Obama himself --I have heard (from the media) that McCain himself used to be a media favorite because he would talk very freely with reporters. Obama is getting attention because he is something new: he is "young" and black. In addtion, as others have mentioned, he is a dynamic speaker and dang smart (which is SO refreshing). I think the whole "world's biggest celebrity" thing is way overblown by the McCain campaign --Palin is getting much more attention than Obama these days.
I totally agree with you Blair. I think it's "popular" in the media to be liberal/democrat. And even though I'm leaning left these days- Palin is getting a lot of press, but most of the attention is pretty negative. And I must say, even if you don't agree with her politics she's a pretty intelligent/articulate woman...

Sam, I agree with you BUT I think it's a lot more "popular" to like Obama. You see far more celebrities wearing Obama t-shirts....
